How to Get a Library Card

Your ticket to entertainment and resources!

You can apply for a card in person at the main circulation desk or in the Children’s Room. Please bring two forms of identification. One must be a photo ID and the second must show proof of residency, such as a lease agreement, car registration or utility bill.

Library card applicants may be turned away from getting a library card if they have a bill associated with another library.

Library cards are free to residents of Rumford, Byron, Roxbury and Hanover. They are also free to employees of the Town of Rumford.

To learn how to apply for a children’s library card, visit the Children’s Room tab here.

Non-resident fees per year are:

  • Regular $30.00
  • Senior (65+) $10.00
  • Disabled $10.00
  • Veteran $10.00
  • Student $10.00

One month cards may be purchased for $5. Once the patron has paid $30, the rest of the year will be free.

Using Your New Library Card

Congratulations on getting your new library card!

Nowadays, having a library card gets you more than just books. You may enjoy our DVD and Blu-Ray collection, audiobooks on compact disc, and a RoKu. It also lets you borrow materials from other libraries. If you prefer reading on a device like a tablet or smartphone, you can use your library card to access CloudLibrary eBooks, audiobooks and comics.

Visit the library catalog, Minerva, from the comfort of your home to see if RPL has a certain item and to place a hold on it. If you don’t find the item, you can order it from a sister library in the Minerva system. Also through Minerva, you can access your library account, renew items and see if you have holds available for pickup. Just enter:

Username: Your name as it appears on your library account
Password: Your library card number, located on the back of your library card
This password will log you into both Minerva and CloudLibrary.

Your borrowing privileges allow you to check out as many books as you would like and up to five DVDs and Blu-Rays at a time. Items borrowed from RPL may be checked out for two weeks at a time, and renewed twice, as long as the item has not been requested by another patron. Interlibrary loans may be checked out for three weeks with one renewal.

In some cases, items that are unavailable through Minerva may be ordered through the MaineCat Catalog from Maine libraries that are not associated with the Minerva catalog. Your username and password will allow you to order an item from this catalog.

For books that are unavailable through either catalog, they may be loaned from out of state libraries. This service is for books only, and patrons must communicate with a librarian directly to request this type of loan.

The library is proud to be fine free! Please be aware that you are still responsible for the cost to replace an item that was never returned or returned with damage. Accounts that accrue $3 or more in billed materials will be suspended, and borrowing privileges will be revoked. Renewals may be made online through the library catalog or you may call or visit the library to renew an item.

You must have your card at all times when checking out library materials. This policy protects you, the cardholder, from having unauthorized people use the account. Your card is your identification card at the library. If your card is lost, you may replace it for $5. Each year, the card expires and must be updated. You may update your card by visiting the Rumford Public Library and providing an ID.

Rumford Public Library cardholders may also enjoy browsing the collection of our sister library, Ludden Library, located in Dixfield on Main Street. Rumford and Ludden library card holders may check out materials at either library.

Remember the library’s other services, including, technology and reference help, use of computers, photocopying, scanning, printing and faxing, library programs, 3-D printing and more.
