Our History

Rumford Public Library was organized in 1903, when public spirited citizens enlisted the aid of Andrew Carnegie, whose donation of $10,000 was added to funds from the town to provide the building which is in use today.

An early report states that Rumford is the first town to erect a library building without a single book to form the nucleus of a library. John Calvin Stevens, from Portland Maine, was the architect of the building. Through the generosity of townspeople and Mr. High Chisholm, the library was supplied with several daily papers, magazines and a collection of book. Rumford remains a proud Carnegie library to this day.
